Who I Am
My name is Caleb Smith. I grew up in the Adirondacks and found my way to the wine world as I worked at the Lake Placid Lodge to support my career in the Olympic sport of skeleton. The thousands of bottles on the wine list intrigued me and were the starting inspiration for my wine journey. I jumped into the world of wine with full commitment at the age of 22, learning as much as I could during my down time from training. When the Lake Placid Lodge burnt down I moved over to The Whiteface Lodge, working and learning from my friend and sommelier, Scott Waller. In 2007 I was accepted into the Home Depot Olympic Program, but my wine education did not stop. I began to taste and study each wine region in my own time, including visits to the Rhone valley, Barolo, Tuscany and California, as well as buying wine for my own cellar. I also frequently visit my good friend Joe Gallo, who is a certified Sommelier in Buffalo, New York. Joe has provided much of my wine education, for which I am eternally grateful.
My Wine Passions
When I drink wine I am effortlessly transported to a fantasy world, one that recalls experiences gone and dreams of the future. It is an amazing escape from our hectic lives that adds incredible amounts of joy and appreciation for life. The inspiration for the concept of this company comes from my experiences learning about wine and my passion in sharing it with others. The world of wine is so large that within our lives we could never expect to know everything about wine. There is always more to learn and because of this there is always mystery. It is an intriguing and enlightening journey and one that I love to share.
